I don't like gyms…even if they were free, I would not go there. Everybody's sweating in the same room and I cannot really be comfortable in front of strangers, sweating as well.
Gyms are only good if you're very strong and need a lot of heavy, expensive different machines or you need to be part of a class to get the motivation from a group (I do fine by myself).
I'm just an average woman so all I need is a good neighborhood, a stationary bicycle and some weights (and also my thigh master and my abs bar and my push-up handles…I have very thin wrists)…and a big sturdy piano bench I use as a weight bench.
At home, I do not have to drive there and I can do my abs in my underwear…
On my cardio days, I use an old DP Air Gometer, which is a stationary bicycle with upper body exercise.
It's bulky and noisy but I get the best cardio workout on it, watching TV full blast…cardios plus lower and upper body workout.
(I have a five day routine that I just repeat…walk, cardio, walk, rest, weights, walk, cardio, walk, rest, weights)

As a human being, you can probably output around 150 Watts. How many watt-hours do you need to run your house? See attached link where a guy generates his own electricity for his house.

the best work out equipment to date are these things that have been around for years, but everyone seems to have forgotten about them, they are the best, ive tried ab rollers, ab loungers, treadmills, ellipticals, weight machines and these are just the best, and its so weird because its the cheapest too- heres what you need – a good pair of running shoes to go for a run or walk around your neighborhood everyday, some big cans of beans or vegetables to weight lift with, a nice flat floor area to do some situps, push ups, lunges etc, a jump rope or maybe just a stereo to dance to the music, and of course good ol' water…

If you want cardio + toning, the only thing you need is a jump rope. Jump ropes are absolutely AMAZING. They are used for aerobic exercise and help tone the legs and arms. Plus, they cost all of around $7 and are VERY easy to store. 45 minutes a day, increasing your time by five minutes every week for one month will yield FANTASTIC results. Just make sure your jump rope is the right size.

All you need are dumbbells. Use light dumbbells to make the treadmill harder. You can also do high intensity interval training like that. Then with heavier dumbbells you can do a full body basic weight lifting routine a couple times a week to tone your muscles. Don't worry, you can't bulk up without steroids. You will gain some muscle, but you won't look big at all. It will also help you gain bone density and keep your joints healthy. This will help you avoid osteoperosis and stiff joints when you get older.

I do like elipticals. I do my intervals on those. You just switch between a high and low setting. Why not get get both. Adjustable dumbbells are cheap anyway.

When I took physics in college one of the problems was to calculate how many calories Bob burned while on a stationary bike utilizing a magnetic flywheel for resistance. This is a very straightforward calculation if you know the strength of the magnet and the speed (RPM's) at which the disk is turning. The values I calculated were ballpark accurate with what the readouts tell me when I use a machine. Treadmills and elliptical machines are also simple. Basically you can calculate how much work is being done to move a given weight a certain distance. These numbers are very simple to calculate using basic laws of physics. I think, if anything, they'd usually be a little LOWER than the true value, as friction and equipment wear and tear will result in more energy being required to overcome uncalculated resistance. The calories burned indicator might cut some corners on how it calculates the number, but for the most part they're pretty accurate.
